Brushing Up for National Children’s Dental Health Month

Posted .

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, but as a family-oriented practice, we believe every day should be about children’s dental health. Healthy smiles start young, and building good habits now will have a lasting, positive impact on your child’s oral health. Since cavities are one of the most common chronic diseases in children, let us help you brush up on some dental tips for kids of any age!

Start Now, Start Early

Even if your baby has not erupted their first tooth, it is a good idea to clean their gums with a soft cloth or baby toothbrush. Once they do have teeth, brush them every day with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to remove bacteria.

Brushing Technique

Although kids usually insist on “doing it themselves,” children under the age of nine lack the dexterity to brush effectively. Allow them to take a turn, then show them how to brush in small circles for about two minutes. As they get older and their skills improve, encourage them to take more responsibility for their daily brushing.

Floss Like a Boss

If any of your child’s teeth touch, they should be flossed. Many cavities begin when food gets trapped between two teeth that brushing alone cannot get rid of. Bonus Tip: Flosser picks can be easier to use instead of traditional floss, in little mouths.

Snack Healthy

Limit your child’s intake of sugary snacks and drinks. Fruit juice, sports drinks and candy can damage enamel and lead to cavities. Try focusing on more fruits, veggies and water when possible. We know it is impossible to avoid sugar, just make sure to brush after!

Schedule Routine Dental Check-Ups

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children see a dentist every six months. Regular visits allow us to catch small issues before they become big problems. We can also monitor tooth development and reinforce good oral hygiene habits.
